ArtX Contemporary is pleased to present Mapping the Invisible, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Perri Lynch Howard. Known for her multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, sound, and installation, Howard brings a distinctive approach to contemporary landscape—one that merges atmospheric abstraction with systems of mapping scientific data beyond immediate perception.

The Frequencies series reflects Howard’s sustained engagement with remote and ecologically sensitive environments from the Arctic Circle to coastal and migratory landscapes. “Sound serves as the primary architect,” writes Howard in her artist statement. “These drawings and paintings navigate the geography of the invisible, utilizing deep listening and audio field recording to map the vibrations of landscapes in transition.” Works from Howard’s Lost Legends series of haunting, minimalistic spaces explore the same vulnerable ecosystems, but through what is absent rather than what is present.

For Howard, landscape is not a fixed image, but a dynamic field shaped by cycles and change. She draws from sound recordings made in the field and direct visual observation of landscape, translating multi-sensory input into paintings that map the movement of light, sound, and seasonal change. Underpinned by radiating grids, landscapes emerge through atmospheric washes and mirrored compositions that evoke both cartographic systems and sonic structures. Through this interplay, Howard reveals the cadence of place—an ongoing rhythm that connects perception, environment, and time.

Howard’s exhibition history spans the United States, Europe, South America, and South Asia, and she has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies, including support from the Puffin Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Art, Artist Trust, the Arctic Circle Residency program and as a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in South India.  Her work is held in private collections and is represented by ArtX Contemporary in Seattle, WA and the Seattle Art Museum Gallery.
