Alla Goniodsky, Sand (2019), oil on board, 36 x 24 inches.

(Seattle, WA – July 24, 2019) Opening First Thursday, August 1st, ArtXchange Gallery presents two new solo exhibitions on display through September 21st. Brightly patterned paintings by Canadian artist Chin Yuen reflect the cultures the artist has experienced in her global travels and moody oil paintings by Alla Goniodsky explore inner landscapes of emotion and memory.

Alla Goniodsky’s new body of abstract paintings, In Between, explores liminal spaces in her memories – the borders between dream and wakefulness, concrete and abstract, known and unknown. Expanding upon the narrative works she is known for, these deeply emotional and atmospheric oil paintings evoke hazy remembrances of landscapes from the past, leaving room for the viewer to connect to their own personal narrative.

Goniodsky is a Russian-born stage designer, puppet-maker, painter and sculptor. After studying at the State Academy of Art and the St. Petersburg Theatrical Academy, she enjoyed a successful career as a theatrical designer. Now residing in the Pacific Northwest, she is a full-time artist and private art instructor. Her work blends an antique, almost Victorian sensibility, with hints of dramatic Russian theatre, quirky humor, and the misty aesthetic of memory.

Through extensive travel and having called seven countries her home, Chin Yuen’s abstract paintings are evocative of diverse cultures and aesthetics. In Fantastic Journeys, Yuen takes the viewer beyond physical destinations and into realms of personal translation and creativity. Yuen, an internationally recognized and award winning painter, was born in Malaysia and studied in Singapore and England before moving to Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Vancouver’s Emily Carr University of Art and Design and a Master of Arts from the University of Victoria, Canada. She has taught art in countries including Canada, Japan and Italy and her diverse cultural exposures are the primary source of her inspiration.

Alla Goniodsky’s In Between and Chin Yuen’s Fantastic Journeys will be on display at ArtXchange Gallery until Saturday, September 21st, 2019.
